Spotlight – Akilah Shaheed, Fertility Family Team

Akilah Shaheed Doula Specializing in birth and breastfeeding support

Born and raised in the East Bay Area of Northern California, Akilah Shaheed was given the nickname Black Panther Flower Child from her father. Always looking to advocate for the rights of others, it is no surprise that she became a Doula after her experience of birthing injustice upon delivery of her son in 2009. In 2015, Akilah fused her experience from working in the medical field and in education and took a leap of faith and applied her knowledge and experience to change the narrative and birthing outcomes of women of color. Working as Assistant Director for A More Excellent Way Health Organization (MEW) allowed Akilah to become a breastfeeding peer counselor and introduced her to the role of a Doula. For the past three years Akilah has been assisting families in navigating through the medical care system and creating their own spaces for homebirths.

In the next five years she hopes to be training with a Traditional Birth Attendant (Midwife) so she can continue to encourage women to catch their own babies in births they’ve designed themselves.

“The best way to battle oppression is to become aware through education and intuition. The perfect moment to remind ourselves this is the process leading up to birth and soon after.”
